How Solar Panels Work:

  • Photovoltaic Effect: Solar panels generate electricity through the photovoltaic effect. This occurs when sunlight (composed of photons) hits the solar cells in the panels, usually made of silicon. The energy from the photons knocks electrons loose in the silicon atoms, creating an electric current.
